Little Dutch Church
Brunswick Street, North End
The Little Dutch Church was built in 1756 and is the second oldest building in Halifax after St. Paul's Church. It stands on Brunswick Street, north from St. George's Church (the Round Church). Its founding congregation was a group of German Lutheran settlers. However, the local Brits could not quite handle the difficult 'Deutsche', and could only manage 'Dutch'. So, the Little Dutch Church got its name.
A similar Anglicization of Deutsche occurred at the German settlement at the very head of the Northwest Arm as it took the name Dutch Village, which also went by the name Westerwald. Today, Dutch Village Road still runs up from the Northwest Arm across the isthmus toward Bedford Basin.
