Fort Ogilvie

Point Pleasant Park

Fort Ogilvie is located in the eastern part of Point Pleasant Park, built to guard against an enemy ship passing through the Stream of the harbour and into the Narrows.  The battery was first built in the mid-1790s by the order of General Ogilvie, then commander of the Halifax garrison.  No, it was not named for him by his fellow officers nor by the governor nor by the citizens following his departure, or due to some brave deed in battle.  He simply named it himself for himself.  As Thomas Raddall put it, Fort Ogilvie now stands "abandoned ... a monument to a little man".
