Memorial Tower, The Dingle

Sir Sanford Fleming Park

The Memorial Tower at Sir Sanford A. Fleming Park, or simply Fleming Park, was completed in 1912 as a result of the work of the local Canadian Club, stands to commemorate the first Legislative Assembly in Halifax in 1758.  It is made of granite and ironstone and sits on a high hill overlooking the Northwest Arm.

Sir Sanford Fleming was the Scottish Canadian who built the Intercolonial Railway and much of the Canadian Pacific Railway.  He also developed the system of Standard Time Zones which is used throughout much of the world today.

This area of the park is also known to Haligonians as The Dingle.  It's a great spot in summer for a picnic.

Two great lions mark the entrance to the Memorial Tower, and watch over the still waters of the Northwest Arm.
