Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Church Built in a Day

As the page title suggests, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is also known as the Church Built in a Day by Halifax residents.  It went up in a single day in August of 1843; about 2,000 volunteers gathered at St. Mary's Basilica and marched down to the cemetery to get to work.  It sits on a hill in Holy Cross Cemetery in Halifax's south end.  The Church Built In A Day seats 70, and has a large stained glass window dating from 1661.  Wood carvings in the chapel were taken from a Flemish church of 1550.
