Anchor - HMCS Bonaventure (Peacetime Naval Memorial)
Point Pleasant Park
Along the southernmost part of Point Pleasant Park sits an anchor from the HMCS Bonaventure, an aircraft carrier in the Royal Canadian Navy from January 7, 1957 to July 3, 1970. In the image on the lower left of this page, MacNab's Island is off to the left, with the breakwater and lighthouse at Maugher's Beach jutting out into the harbour mouth, and the mainland lies on the right; behind the anchor lies the mouth of Halifax Harbour and the open Atlantic Ocean.
The anchor stands to honour those who lost their lives at sea in peacetime. A plaque on the base of the anchor reads:
| "To commemorate the personnel of the Armed Forces of Canada who lost their lives in peacetime at sea in the performance of their duties and for whom there is no known grave." |

This aircraft carrier took part in NATO tactical exercises over the years, and worked as a training platform. Bonaventure was named after the bird sanctuary in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This aircraft carrier was commissioned at Belfast on January 17, 1957 and arrived at Halifax on June 26. She had Banshee jet fighters and Tracker aircraft as her complement.
